Pet Dental Extraction

Why Do Pets Need Dental Extractions?

When gum or periodontal disease is present, it means that the tissue connecting the tooth to the underlying bone has weakened. As a result, an extraction may be required. Your pet may also need extractions if the teeth are broken, baby teeth won’t fall out, or there are oral tumors.

How Are Pet Teeth Extracted?

Before extracting any teeth, our vet will administer anesthesia. The anesthesia is necessary, as it helps keep your cat or dog comfortable and safe. Along with that, it allows our veterinarian to complete the surgery quickly and efficiently. The surgery can last anywhere from a few minutes to an hour, depending on the condition of the roots.

Typically, before pulling the tooth, we will clean your pet's teeth and take x-rays. Once your pet is under anesthesia, we will create flaps in the gum region surrounding the tooth to ensure we remove the entire tooth and roots. Our vet may use a drill or other instruments to break down the tooth to and make the extraction easier. Once the tooth is removed, we will clean the area and stitch the wound.

Recovery and Aftercare

After the surgery, your pet may experience some swelling, drooling, lack of appetite, and low energy for 48 to 72 hours. Our vet will provide aftercare instructions for your pet, which may include providing soft food, no brushing, and ensuring he or she rests in a comfortable spot. Additionally, we might prescribe antibiotics and pain medication to reduce symptoms and prevent infections.
